PDF, docx files

Over the years in seminary, I have downloaded and collected many pdf and docx files. I would like to see Logos having the ability to search these files, make cross-reference, and make notes. If this cannot be done, another alternative is that Logos provides an internal program that would convert these files to native logos format.

I would love to be able use/import my pdf files into L4

If Logos don't want to develop this kind of functionality themselves, one possibility might be to link into research tools which already do this kind of thing
        e.g. Mendeley (http://www.mendeley.com/) and Qiqqa (http://www.qiqqa.com/)
This would have the advantage of tools that already index and allow search of PDFs, with the ability to create properly formatted references/citations from both Logos and associated PDFs.
I realise that Mendeley in particular is pitched more at scientific communities, but it could easily be adapted to Theology and biblical studies.
Qiqqa is more geared towards students but has other useful functions like being able to link PDFs with notes to make mindmaps: to link this kind of functionality to Logos would be awesome!

I don't have too much luck with converting PDF into docx even though I tried various tools. It would be great if you could include PDF as one of the input formats for the personal book builder.

While I voted for this, there is a problem with implementing this. Unless the document was created as a PDF by a PDF creating program (such as Adobe Acrobat), it is very, very, very difficult to get an accurate rendering for searching. Many PDF's on EBSCO are just scans which are not searchable (a mere photograph of sorts). I use a scanner (the KIC Scan) at a local library that is able to make scans searchable PDFs (which I use for electronic marking up), however, the searchability and mark-up-ability (namely--electronic highlighting and underlining) is spotty at best.

This is also important because almost all Biblical scientific articles are published to the web in PDF format. Just think of EBSCO, for example, as a source of these. There are dozens of programs out there that allow you to download these PDF files and do searches on them, including free ones. So, adding at least the basic functionality of including PDF files in search results probably isn't terribly difficult. It would be very useful to be able to integrate these PDF files into Logos.

I don't know about others, I don't wish to accuse nor attack. I only have need of the ability to put .pdf files (at least the simple b/w ones into PBB. I hope that it could be possible in the forseeable future.

@Lars: I'm not sure how my comments are "misleading"; I told you the exact reason we're not implementing it.

PDF conversion is a complex problem that takes time away from solving other problems. We currently think that our time would be better spent implementing other features (for example, there are 20 features on UserVoice that have more votes than this, plus we have other features and plans that aren't driven by UserVoice). Perhaps we'll get to this after completing those 20 first, but (as I said), "it is highly unlikely that we will implement this in the near future".

If you would be willing to pay for an upgrade, you could consider buying a PDF to Word converter (from a company that specialises in writing software to perform this conversion) and add PDFs to Logos 4 by converting them to docx first.

If it is only a technical problem, then it would only be a matter of time until Logos engineers figured it out IF Logos puts it on their agenda and makes a concerted effort. My hunch is that Logos has a business interest in keeping this conversion out of their software. Many out-of copyrighted books, including theological ones, can be downloaded for free from archive.org as pdf files, which means lost business for Logos if they could simply be added to my Logos program via PBB. Guys, either be honest with us customers (we aren't stupid!), or put this on your to-do list. You may even charge for such an upgrade. But don't mislead.

Performing a high-fidelity conversion from PDF to another format (DOCX or Logos 4) is a very difficult technical problem; it is highly unlikely that we will implement this in the near future.

I have to say I am hurt. My denomination sends books/papers with open lisence to use in PDF not .docx and this idea is CLOSED?

        Logos, Please reconsider!!!

I too am disappointed. This isn't really helpful to those of us who rely on PDF as a truly portable choice.

      • Rusty DavidsonRusty Davidson commented  ·

I must admit this is the first time I have been truly disappointed by a decision by Logos.

      • LukeLuke commented  ·

This feature wasn't really "completed" it was declined. I sure wish you would reconsider.

We do acquire many PDF's in our reasearch and even some notes saved to Pages format would be great to include in the PBB for us L4 Mac users.

      • Wes CrouchWes Crouch commented  ·

Docx files can be added to PBB why not PDF files?

      • Andrew MackieAndrew Mackie commented  ·

Let users point Logos to a directory that contains PDFs that they'd like to access via Logos and import them all automatically (without need to give each of them title and author information). This will allow us a powerful environment in which we can search for a bible passage in Logos, say, and see *all* of the PDFs that refer to that passage. If we then open one of those PDFs within Logos, *then* we can mark it by title and author so it appears as a PBB and in the library.

This will give us more power, greater use of the resources that we already own and minimize the amount of effort to use Logos as our central repository of biblical content (which is what Logos wants, right?).

PBB has come out and it only imports doc files and is more for writing your own books. What is needed is the ability to take other digital books and add them to our already existing massive library in logos. These books/resources could be imported from PDFs, Word docs, ePUBs, etc., include pagination, and citation information. The result is no matter where you find a resource you can add it to your library that is searchable and highly organized.

Personal Books already has the ability to put Word documents into PBB, so now PDF would be the next thing for Personal Books to incorporate!

This is my #1 need right now is access to PDF files from within Logos. All our denominational resources are in PDF and I often need to reference them. A huge plus would be the ability for us (someone in our denomination) to convert them into Logos format and have true referential functionality. Any chance a tech manual for this is available?

      • Wes CrouchWes Crouch commented  ·

This would be wonderful to have since there are books that have been emailed to me from my District Council headquarters which would be useful to me but not profitable to Logos for buying/selling.
