I couldn't agree more, both being able to find these sub-"resources" from the library, and the ability to set up searches over (and hence collections of) these sub-"resources". This should work for books of books, books of papers, and books of articles (like dictionaries and encylopedias)
If it was too hard to change these things as requested, a poor man's interim solution might be to allow users to "explode" a resource so that its papers, chapters or articles became resources in their own right in their own local library of resources.
