Focus on Code/Performance Optimization
General program performance improvement (searching, loading, opening, etc) and optimization through optimizing code efficiency.

We have done a lot of work on performance, and continue to optimize the app on both Windows and the Mac.
I am closing this case to free up votes on more specific feature priorities. (You may also want to create new issues for specific performance bottlenecks.)
This does not mean we are done optimizing or improving the product; simply that after two years at the top of the list we know it’s a priority — that can never be completely done — and will continue to work on it.

In addition to dealing with the crashing that the Mac version seems to be prone for in regard to a 'minority' of users, this is probably the single biggest complaint universally about Logos. Just Google on 'Logos' AND 'Speed'.

I use Logos 4 on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. I find it frustratingly slow to open the programme, open a layout etc. For me it is slower than Logos 3 used to be

Typing in Notes can be frustratingly slow - but wierdly - "typing" using voice dictation software (Drgaon Naturally Speaking) is much faster!

The overall all usability performance of L4 Mac is poor. With SR-2 it was okay, but with SR-3, it got significantly worse. It seems on the forums whenever this is brought up, excuses and strong rebuttal come from certain corners, but for the first time, this week, the usability of L4 was so bad that I had the thought, "Maybe I should consider another software platform." I've never had that thought pop into my head before in regards to Logos.
All the pieces that deal with user input and interaction Have to get much faster. Or else using L4 is going to become more and more of a burden. -

"sclark
This should be done regardless, Logos should always strive to improve the product without having users vote on it. After all, a faster tool for searching our books is just the fundamental use of the tool itself."
...well said!

Should be number one on the list, especially the Mac version.

this Voting Page should come up in the home page when you open Logos, i happend apon it some where else, you might get more response, but i think you find that everyone agrees, search is way to slow, even though it is faster then walking across the room to look in a book.. sometimes

I can search the entire internet for a bible verse faster than logos can search the bible :(
Love the program - but definitely work required in optimising speed. -

I think a lot of this can by changing many of the default options. Granted this make the program to "showy" to the first time user. But following the suggestions in the wiki and making sure that the passage and exegetical guides keep all of the searches closed until directly requested make a major difference. I have helped a number of people who hated the performance or were about the quit using Logos with these setting and now they love Logos and its performance. Logos is mature enough now that it does not need to show off all its functions by default. Or maybe give us a "high performance" option in setting that changes these defaults and lets it run quickly. Using tagging books instead of making dynamic collection also seems to help performance.

I have been using Logos 4 Mac for almost a year now. I love it. I hate how slow it is. A professor of mine has Accordance running on his 6-7 year computer and it scrolls MUCH faster and loads MUCH faster than Logos 4 Mac, and my computer is a Macbook 2008 model (before the 13 inch Macbook in unibody casing went to Macbook Pro status), so my computer should be noticeably faster. It is, but Logos is slower than Accordance in starting up, searching and scrolling. Please optimize Logos' performance. It also uses up a lot of memory, quite a bit more than Accordance does. Also, when typing in text, Logos 4 freezes for a while (time of freezing varies) before the letters show. Please make Logos 4 Mac much more efficient.

Features are nothing if an application does not perform well.
In fact it becomes more and more frustrating the more features are put into a software program if it does not have reasonable/good performance because people see all the good things that they are, essentially, missing out on because if an application performs badly the functions are unusable.
Performance is the solid and necessary foundation that everything else is secondary to.

The mac edition of Logos is terribly slow at times. Windows isn't great either, but both need quite a bit of work on performance.

Typing in Notes is so frustrating. The delay between pressing a key and seeing the result on the screen is a real productivity killer. Yes, I'm a touch typist, so I'm not always looking at the screen; but it's especially evident when I'm backspacing to fix up errors.
I could understand the delay if it was an issue of editing video or manipulating large photos. But typing text?!
This is the simplest thing possible to do on a computer, and Logos can't handle that efficiently. There must be a couple of dozen different tools they could use for formatting text; why did they choose -- and then stick with, even long after it has proved unsuitable -- one which is so plainly bad?

% or six years ago the speed of this program would be acceptable. But have you done a search on Google lately... and they are dealingwith hundreds of millions of entries!

I just purchased Logos and my first impression is that it is unbelievably SLOW!!! How much did I pay for this? Even with all the automatic features turned off, just simply trying to scroll a window is slow. The time it takes me to minipulate the layout reduces my study time considerably. I can use other bible software and do a search for "the" in the entire bible in 7 seconds! That includes extracting every verse (23,808 verses) and putting them into a scrollable window that does not lag in the least when I scroll it. Having the automatic features and the huge library to chose from is great if the GUI was responsive.

A friend said that disabling the internet connection in Logos speeded up his macbook pro, but I'm not willing to go into that direction...

Especially on the Mac. I am running a 2010 MacBook Pro. The scrolling and such is still really slow when compared to other pieces of software. I am even running 8gb of RAM.

Please do a performance review and optimize whatever possible! Performance is my one major gripe about Logos. Remember that not everyone is using a Core i7 gamer desktop...
Also, please consider adding a progress indicator when loading a new layout. The 5-10 second delay to switch layouts (with no indication that anything is happening) is quite annoying.
